CREVE COEUR (WEEK) — Peoria fire officials say one man is dead after a jet ski accident along the Illinois River Sunday evening.
Crews responded to 579 Wesley Road around 6:30 p.m. after they were dispatched to provide aid for a river rescue.
A dispatch report said Peoria Fire Boat and Dive Team was requested after a jet ski went underwater and the operator did not resurface.
Once on scene, Creve Coeur Command confirmed an individual on a jet ski, around 50 feet from the address location, fell off and started yelling for help.
Two friends attempted to swim toward the victim and rescue him, but became exhausted and needed assistance.
A boat operated by Fondulac Police used sonar to detect the victim in the water, and once he was located, a Peoria Fire Department Rescue Driver was sent into the water.
Crews battled a fast current to locate and remove the victim from the water.
The victim was placed in the police boat, transported to the boat ramp, and turned over to the Tazewell County Coroner.
The identity of the victim is not yet known at this time.
