PEORIA (WEEK) — Police say one person is dead after a shooting at a residence in Peoria early Sunday morning – officers believe the shooting may have occurred during a home burglary.
Police responded to the 2800 block of West Gilbert Avenue around 1:00 a.m. regarding a report of a person shot.
When they arrived, officers found a victim – an adult male – in the backyard of a residence with apparent gunshot wounds.
Responding officers performed life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead on the scene.
Information gathered at the scene determined a resident of the home had arrived and may have interrupted a burglary in process.
Police say the resident confronted the intruder and shots were fired.
Peoria County Coroner was on scene and will identify the victim, as well as a cause of death, after an autopsy is performed.
The occupant of the residence was transported to the Peoria Police Department Criminal Investigations Division for interview purposes.
Police say the incident is still under investigation, and anyone with information should contact Detective Clint Rezac at (309) 494-8364 or CrimeStoppers anonymously at (309) 673-9000.
