PEORIA (WEEK) – On Friday, 5 Central Illinois students were accepted into our nation’s military academies.
The 18th District’s newest students are from Quincy, Washington, Macomb, Lincoln, and Peoria.
On Friday, Rep. Darin LaHood hosted the Annual Academy Appointee Reception at his Peoria District Office.
“There’s lots of colleges they could have gone too, but they chose to- again to take the path of serving our country. And, today is a way to congratulate them and let them know our country is proud of their service.”
-Rep. Darin LaHood
The 5 young men and women were accepted into the U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, or West Point.
25 News spoke with one student who talked about how his lieutenant and mentors inspired him to join the U.S. Naval Academy.
“Even at a young age, I’ve always been interested in trying to do something a little bit bigger… I guess I had never thought about going to the Naval Academy originally, I didn’t think it was attainable. I thought it was kind of a grandiose path, but through their help I don’t think I could have made it without their help.”
-Luke Terrell, Corporal in Marine Corps
While a congressional nomination is the most common way to be accepted into these roles, candidates may also be eligible for a military affiliated nomination.
