JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WSVN) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed into law a controversial sports bill blocking transgender girls and women from playing on public school teams consistent with their gender identity.
DeSantis signed the bill Tuesday morning at Trinity Christian Academy in Jacksonville. Tuesday also marks the start of LGBTQ Pride Month, which takes place during the month of June.
The new law bans transgender girls and women from playing on public school teams intended for student athletes born as girls.
“In Florida, girls are gonna play girls sports and boys are gonna play boys sports,” DeSantis said during the event.
Under the law, a transgender student-athlete would have to affirm her biological sex by supplying proof such as a birth certificate. The proposal also would allow another student to sue if a school allows a transgender girl or woman to play on a team intended for biological females.
The law officially takes effect on July 1.
