PEORIA HEIGHTS (WEEK) – Springdale Cemetery honored fallen veterans with a ceremony in one of several Memorial Day events by the American Legion Post 2 honor guard Sunday.
The Marine Corps League of Peoria and community members gathered to pay respects to 78 marines who have fallen in combat.
They read aloud names of the fallen marines followed by a salute.
The cemetery also posted flags for people to drive by and remember those who died in service.
Commandant of the Marine Corps League William Olsen said the ceremony in remembering those who have died serving the country.
“We improvised a little bit and had the young marines out to help us and I think everything went great today,” Olsen said. “Very significant to remember all of our brothers and sisters that have fallen in combat.”
American Legion Post 2 will continue to honor marines on Monday at 2 p.m. at Tower Park in Peoria Heights.
