PEORIA (WEEK) — With the month of May almost over, local groups got ready for June and Pride Month in style with a drag show.
Central Illinois Friends hosted PrEPing for Pride at Mack’s in Peoria Friday night.
The event is normally a three-day weekend of celebrations, but it was scaled down due to pandemic concerns.
Organizers said the drag show was a way to celebrate LGBTQ people and to raise awareness of ways to prevent HIV.
“To be able to gather, not just to celebrate pride, but also to celebrate public health,” said performer and organizer Artemisia Vanho, “and we’re here to provide services leading into [Pride Month], and so it’s really awesome to gather with them and celebrate with the community.”
Central Illinois Friends will host another PrEPing for Pride event Saturday night.
Peoria Proud will also hold events throughout the month of June. Find a list here.
