MORTON (WEEK) – Katherine King was a third year teacher Bethel Lutheran School in Morton. She was killed in a multi-car crash in Peoria May 4.
Bethel Lutheran Principal John Jacob said shortly after her death they would be planning some sort of memorial. Thursday, in a ceremony with Ms. King’s Class and the rest of the school, they broke ground on a Memorial Garden.
“This is a loss that’s not going to be easily replaced. So this memorial garden will give us the opportunity to at least be able to remember her. And have a place to sit and contemplate and just remember the great qualities that she had,” said Principal Jacob.
Principal Jacob said Ms. King was finding her true voice as a young teacher, and inspired other teachers around her with her fresh ideas. He said she was bright, energetic, and joyful to be around.
The school is also starting a scholarship fund in her name to help other young people who want to pursue a career in Lutheran education.
Construction of the garden is expected in July, at which point they will hold a celebration of her life.
