MORTON (WEEK) – The Morton School Board didn’t have to look far to find its next superintendent.

Craig Smock,, who’s been assistant superintendent for the past 14 years, is expected to replace retiring Superintendent Jeff Hill.

The District 709 School Board will vote on Smock’s contract at its June 1 meeting.

In a news release, the district said Smock is considered a “go-to guy” for various school issues. This past year, he coordinated the district’s COVID-19 response, and he’s credited with helping keep classrooms open for in-person learning during the pandemic.

Smock is from Tremont. He’s been principal at Pekin, Peoria Heights, and Bradford High Schools, and was a math teacher at Ottawa Township High School.

Smock intends to lead the Morton district, which has seven schools, including Morton High School.
