FARMINGTON (WEEK) – A season-ending injury caused one Central Illinois senior to miss out on pitching her final year of high school softball; but on Wednesday her coach made a special arraignment for her to throw out the first pitch.
Farmington High School’s Abbey Gilles was supposed to be the senior starting pitcher for the 2020 – 2021 season, but tore her meniscus during practice before the first game of the season.
This year, she has been keeping track of the scores and gameplays from the dugout.
Late Wednesday afternoon, Farmington softball coach Jeni Fauser allowed Gilles to throw out the first pitch against the Illini Bluffs.
“I’ve been here with my teammates helping them out, doing the book, but it feels really great to get out there and be able to like pitch somewhat normal again,” said Gilles.
After graduation, she plans on studying Elementary Education in the Fall at Illinois Central College.
