PEORIA (WEEK) – After months of pushback, Peoria Public Schools has changed the name of Thomas Jefferson Primary School to C.T. Vivian Primary School.
In a unanimous vote Monday night, Thomas Jefferson Primary School was the first of 6 schools in District 150 to face a name change.
C. T. Vivian was a prominent civil rights leader who led sit-ins in Peoria and eventually integrated Barton’s Cafeteria in 1947.
Back in April, when the proposal was tabled, School Board Vice President Gregory Wilson said Thomas Jefferson’s slave ownership does not represent equality.
The name change will be effective July 1.
