(NBC) — Health officials are investigating a salmonella outbreak linked to backyard chickens.
The CDC reports at least 163 people have gotten sick from 43 different states, including Illinois. CDC data shows 3 people from Illinois have gotten sick, but the data does not show where or how severe the sickness was.
No deaths have been reported, but 34 people have been hospitalized.
The CDC is now reminding everyone to wash their hands after handling live poultry. Health officials say the birds carrying the bacteria can still appear healthy and clean.
