PEORIA (WEEK) — Community members gathered Saturday to enjoy each other’s company and help spread awareness of multiple sclerosis.
To celebrate “Walk MS”, the group MS Patients Leading Change hosted its first event since March of last year.
Usually the event is a long walk, but this year, the group switched it up and held a swing-by event at Portillo’s in Peoria.
Gift bags and Portillo’s hotdogs were given to anyone who attended.
Group member Nancy Silver says people in the past have underestimated the importance of MS awareness, and they often don’t realize more than a million people in the US live with the disease.
“It creates such a challenge to figure out how to navigate your life with this disease,” Silver said.
Silver adds the event aims to help remind everyone living with MS that they can still thrive in their daily life.
The group plans to host more events as summer approaches.
