Investigators said the cause of the fire that killed three young siblings in February is not specified, but that one of the children may have started it.
It is possible that the “human element” played a role in a house fire near Kokomo that killed Miracle Gingerich, 6; Stephen Gingerich, 5; Wilma Gingerich, 1, Miami County Police Sergeant. Gary Glassborn said.
The Indianapolis Star newspaper reported that investigators had found no evidence of “defective equipment or other sources of ignition,” and interviews with family members revealed that one of the children had previously set fire to the house.
The last statement said: “While the exact cause of the fire has not been determined, the evidence is consistent with the fire.”
The children’s mother, who was in the bathroom on the first floor, called the authorities on the morning of the fire to report that her children were trapped on the second floor. The firefighters found the children unconscious and not breathing. They were sent to area hospitals and later died.
The mayor’s office said that an autopsy showed that the three brothers died from “inhalation injuries due to the house fire.” Their death ruled by chance.
