PEORIA (WEEK) — Family and friends came together Monday evening to remember the life of 34-year-old Joshua Perkins.

“They just took somebody’s life. Ain’t no bringing that back. He’s gone,” said Perkins’ cousin, Alissa Fitzpatrick.

Peoria Police said Perkins was shot and killed outside the Shell gas station in Peoria’s South Side, Sunday night.

Officers arrested two 17-year-olds. Both are charged for first degree murder, armed robbery and possession of controlled substances.

Fitzpatrick said he was a strong, loving and caring person.

“He was always there when you needed him. If you needed a shoulder to lean on you could always call him,” said Fitzpatrick.

Although this tragedy, Peoria’s eighth homicide this year, does not surprise neighbors in the area.

“So many senseless crimes. It’s way too many,” said Peoria resident, Cheryl Kay.

Kay said something needed to be done to end the violence.

“More surveillance to protect the kids,” Kay continued, “Perhaps, if they shut the store down overnight, that would kind of alleviate some of the crime in this area.”

Fitzpatrick said it didn’t have to end this way for Perkins.

“Nobody life should be taken over some simple stuff y’all can talk out,” said Fitzpatrick.
