The parents of a 3-month-old boy with permanent brain damage were arrested earlier this week in Colorado after police accused the couple of child abuse.

The Evans Police Department said Chien Vela, 27, of Greeley, and Raphael Injungu, 23, of Evans, had been arrested.

Evans Police and the Weld County Attorney’s Office began an investigation after the child was taken to the emergency department at UCHealth Greeley Medical Center for seizures.

Authorities said hospital staff determined that the boy was bleeding in his brain before he was taken by helicopter to Colorado Children’s Hospital in Aurora. He was immediately taken to the intensive care unit, where police said it took him several days to stabilize him enough for a full evaluation.

Police said the assessment revealed that the boy had several broken bones all over his “entire body” and had suffered irreversible brain damage. Police said he would face “great challenges” for the rest of his life.

Authorities said the child has recovered and has been released to child protection services.

Villa and Ingwongo was arrested on multiple criminal charges, including child abuse, false reporting to authorities, and more.

Online court records do not show whether Villa and Engwongwo have a lawyer who can comment on their behalf.

They have not yet had the opportunity to petition. Both are due to appear in court
