Authorities said one man was killed and another seriously injured in a fire that raged in Manhattan’s East Side.
Fire Department officials said the fire broke out on the second floor of a four-story apartment building on Second Avenue near East 81st Street at around 8:30 a.m. It took about an hour and a half for the firefighters to put out the fire, said Michael Agilo, deputy assistant chief of fire.
A police spokesman said that two residents of the building were taken to a nearby hospital, where one was declared dead and the other was in critical condition.
Their names were not immediately revealed.
Agilo said one of the firefighters was slightly injured.
Officials said the apartment where the fire started was too crowded, hindering rescue efforts. “One of the obstacles that we faced in the shooting process was the fact that there was a large amount of contents in the apartment,” Agilo said in a press release at the site of the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
